Is Lodge cast iron non toxic?
Yes! Lodge Cast Iron is made with just iron and 100% natural vegetable oil. Our iron mix is a combination of recycled steel, reclaimed iron, raw pig iron, and alloys that enhance the iron's strength. The vegetable oil is applied at our foundry to create each pan's seasoning—essentially, a protective layer of oil that is fused to the pan under high heat to create a nonstick finish. This finish can be enhanced at home using oil and heat. It is entirely natural and improves each time you cook with your cast iron pan.
What are forever chemicals?
Also known as PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, these chemicals get their nickname because they do not break down naturally in the environment. PFAS are known for repelling water, grease, and stains and have been used in home goods since the 1950s—especially in coated cookware. In recent years, public health researchers have discovered that these forever chemicals can contaminate drinking water and pose health problems to people who are directly exposed.
Does cast iron contain PFAS?
Lodge has been made without PFAS since the beginning. We proudly make cookware that never needs to see a landfill, without harmful forever chemicals. We know that our cookware has been non toxic since the very beginning, but we also lean on vetted, third-party labs to verify that our cookware is free not only of PFAS, but also dangerous levels of Lead and Cadmium.
At Lodge, we believe one of the most meaningful impacts we can have is to create products that last a lifetime. A typical nonstick pan can last as little as three years before it loses its coating and must be discarded, while a Lodge Cast Iron pan lasts literal generations.
