Cast Iron Griddles 101

What is a griddle?

A cast iron griddle has a flat cooking surface with slightly raised edges to keep oil, batter, and other ingredients mostly contained. The shallow edges make it easy to maneuver spatulas and other cooking utensils to flip pancakes and french toast, fry eggs and sausage, and toast paninis and grilled cheese sandwiches. You can use a cast iron griddle on any stovetop—including induction—on a grill, or over a campfire.

Why use a griddle instead of a skillet?

The main difference between a skillet and griddle is the height of the sides. Griddles have low edges, while skillets have higher sidewalls. Most griddles have a much larger cooking surface than skillets. Our double burner griddles span across two stovetop burners, making them the perfect piece of cookware for family gatherings and parties. Make breakfast on those lazy weekend mornings for the whole family. Cook up a big pile of grilled cheese sandwiches to enjoy with tomato soup on a rainy day.

Use griddles for more than just breakfast.

Yes, griddles conjure up the sweet scent of french toast and pancakes, and they make us reminisce of family breakfasts growing up or inspire us to have a homemade brunch with friends. But this versatile cookware is made for so much more. Thanks to its excellent heat retention and generous cooking surface, the griddle is great for making skirt steak, fish, and other entrees that are too large for a skillet. You can use our cast iron or carbon steel griddles to easily roast veggies on the grill.

How to cook with cast iron griddles

Just like our other cast iron cookware, gradually preheat the griddle to medium heat, add a little oil or fat, then add your food to start cooking.
