Making colorful enamel in the United States has been a dream of ours for years. When it came time to make it a reality, we knew we had to capture every moment of the process. Get a behind-the-scenes look at just how USA Enamel™ came to be, from the folks who’ve been along for every step of the journey.

USA Enamel in Production

Innovation has always been a big part of our legacy. It’s what led us to season all of our cast iron in our South Pittsburg Foundries—an extra step in the manufacturing process that had never been done before and that’s now an industry standard. For years, we knew that bringing color to our cast iron was our next historic move, but it came with challenges unlike anything we’d ever done before.

We hit the drawing board, asking ourselves: How do we take a classic piece of cookware like the dutch oven and design in it a way that looks and feels completely original? Our team paid attention to every single detail, taking inspiration from mid-century design in everything from classic cars to vintage guitars.

“After making cast iron cookware for as long as we have, there was always something else that we had our minds set on. And that was color.”

- Mike Otterman, President & CEO

USA Enamel, Cloud Nine

We built an enameling facility from the ground up, right here in South Pittsburg, our hometown for over 125 years. At the center of this state-of-the-art facility, you’ll find an Italian-designed furnace. This 148-foot-long piece of machinery contains over 100,000 moving pieces and is the only one of its kind in the United States. This is where our team perfected the enameling process and now handcrafts each piece of USA Enamel before it reaches your kitchen.

Then we actually had to start making the enameled dutch ovens—a process our enameling team describes as part science, part art. The dutch ovens start in the same Foundry we use to make our beloved cast iron skillets. Then they’re transported to our Enameling Facility for an hours-long enameling process. There, our team handcrafts each piece to uphold our high-quality standards, so they not only look beautiful, but last generations.

Made by originals, for originals.
